The song Rocky Mountain High was written by John Denver after he moved to Colorado, and the song is his way of showing his love of Colorado and what he experienced there. He actually changed his surname to Denver after Colorado’s capital. The song is actually one of the official songs of Colorado. Personally, I love this song because of its instrumental music and folk music aspect.
The song describes the richness of the nature in Colorado, and how one can go there to to escape from the busyness of everyday life. One of my favorite parts that describes this is, “Now he walks in quiet solitude, the forest and the streams, seeking grace in every step he takes.” It shows how nature and all of its beauty can help someone to just escape and clear their mind, and that’s exactly what John Denver did. I’ve never been to Colorado, but I really want to go there someday to see the natural beauty, especially the mountains as described in this line, “He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below,he saw everything as far as you can see.” I like to think the song is titled rocky mountain high not only for the beauty from on top of the mountains, but because of the “high” that one can get of peacefulness from the breath taking beauty and freshness of the rocky mountains. Now a days the song gets made fun of because of the fact that Colorado legalized marijuana, and now some people think that is what the song is all about, but they’re wrong, the song is about the beauty of Colorado.
